International youth art and cultural project

Klerskorp- The Diary Project USA/Kenya/South Africa – an art project and cultural exchange programming serving youth and adults in communities throughout the world – is in South Africa for a series of workshops and exhibitions.

The director of the Visual Arts Programme, Mark Scheflen from New York , has now brought the Diary Project to the Klerksdorp youth.  Scheflen said the youth are being taught mask-making, painting, and drawing workshops. 

“In addition, they create video clips, read poetry and make photo diaries in response to the US/Kenyan youth.” Scheflen said he will visit community centres, churches, and schools to exhibit and implement a series of photography, video and creative writing workshops in rural and urban South Africa .  “The diaries and artwork made last year by the Americans and Kenyans will be exchanged with a selected group of South African Youth.  The artwork created by the Klersdorp youth will become part of the worldwide United Nations exhibit opening in New York this coming summer.

“The exhibit will travel back to Durban to be part of a conference eon racism, intolerance and xenophobia.”

Scheflen said on return to the USA , there will be a series of exhibitions including the work of South Africans, Kenyans and Americans.
